Gent - Maastricht - Alsace

We will be traveling this itinerary by car for 10-12 days in May. Can anyone recommend hotels in the 150-170 euro range for Gent and Maastricht? Should we stay 2 nights each in Strasbourg and Colmar or use one city as a base to explore Alsace. Any hotel recommendations for Alsace? Thank you.

In 2001, we stayed in a charming inn in Ottrott in the Alsace area, near Obernai, www.amifritz.com. You can read my trip report of the area at http://www.travelswithdiane.homestea...ip2001pg5.html

We also stayed at amifritz. Loved it. Great place to base yourself. Colmar & Strasbourg are nice places to visit, but just a couple of large cities. Stay around the smaller villages in Alsace. You'll love the experience.

Nice trip report, luvtotravel. We were there in 2002 at all the same places. ((b))

This is a wonderful area to explore, and compact enough that staying in one location would be fine. On a recent trip we stayed in Obernai, which offers good access to Strassbourg and Colmar, and the several villages nearby. I don't recommend the hotel we picked, the Parc. It's a fine establishment, but the restaurant failed to impress. Obernai is a very cute town with lots of restaurants, so a hotel closer to the center would have been more convenient.

You might want to try a B&B. Here's my description of the one we used (cash only):

We found our B&B through the Ghent web page, choosing first by geographical location and then by what was available in the area. The location was perfect, the room was in the "courtyard" and was very quiet. I put courtyard in quotation marks because we were on the second floor and what had been a courtyard was now a covered space with a deck on top. The weather was perfect for us to have breakfast on the deck every morning. Had the weather been otherwise the room had a large sitting area in front of a fire place with a small table for writing or having breakfast. The one quirkiness: the bathroom was behind a wall but had no door. For availability, contact Anne Gourhant Steyaert (annegourhant@hot mail com) Burgstraat 25, 9000 Gent.
