Genoa - arriving by train : where to stay?

We are in the final planning stages of our trip to Italy - Lucca- Cinque Terre- Santa Margherita Ligure and one final night in Genoa before flying home the next day. Since we are arriving by train into Genoa, where will be a good location to look for a hotel? I am looking for ease in arriving from the train, centrally located to the interesting sites ( is that the older part of the city? the harbor? ) and a nice place to stay. Primarily, I wold love to hear from Fodorites familiar with Genoa who can give me some good guidance, since I can't glean too much from the books. Mille graze!

Get off at the Brignole Station, and walk 10 minutes to the Bristol Palace. Great location, nice hotel.

We arrived and left Genoa via the Principe station, and stayed at a small, friendly family-run place called Hotel Cairoli on Via Cairoli. We walked from the train station – it’s a comfortable 10 minutes away along Via Balbi towards Piazza Nunziata. The location is perfect for exploring the city on foot – the historical centre (Via Garibaldi and surrounds), the Porto Antico area and the Aquarium are all easily accessible.

I always go to Agnello d'Oro, 3 min by foot from Piazza Principe station, in a quiet dead end lane.
