Geneva to Zermatt Train Info?

Hello,

I am traveling to Switzerland and will arrive in Geneva, I need to know what train to take to Zermatt. Which train is the fastest scenic and cheap? Is there one better then the other? Thank you!

There is only one line and the price is the same with any trains you take. Remember Visp(or Brig)-Zermatt (semi private line) is (one of the)the most cosly line per kilometers in Switzerland. On the railway, the Lake Léman area especially from Lausanne to Villeneuve is quite scenic.

Input Geneva-airport and Zermatt on the following site and it will give you the quickest train connections (usually change at Visp). To get the price, click on "Book".

bal,
Swissrail has a variety of discounted passes available in the US.
If Zermatt is your only destination, they offer a second class transfer pass for 57GBP (RT good for 30 days if I'm reading the web site correctly).

The "fastest" would be to take a Cisalpino from Geneva to Brig and change there for Zermatt. However, "fastest" in this case means...

about 15-20 minutes faster to Brig; the inability to change trains in Visp since Cisalpinos don't stop there and you'll have to backtrack from Brig to Visp; you'll need a seat reservation on the Cisalpino, and it doesn't start out at the Geneva airport train station so you'll have to change at the downtown Geneva station after taking a train there from the airport...

IMO FORGET the 'fastest' and take one of the regular trains to Visp which starts out at the Geneva airport station. The folks at the rail ticket office at the airport station all speak excellent English in my personal experiences and they are also very helpful.

When you get to Visp you'll be changing to the Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn railway..the station is directly across the street from the station you'll arrive at.

On the trip Geneva-Visp, sit on the RIGHT-HAND side of the train facing forward for the lake views and the opposite side for the hillside views.

I can only add that the train station is attached to the airport at Geneva - in case you didn't know that. You simply walk down the hall. No trains are "cheap" in Switzerland but they are very nice service and of reasonable cost IMO. I would probably buy a point-to-point 2nd class ticket from the ticket window after I arrived.

If you are flying into Geneva, there is also a discount ticket that allows you to travel anywhere in Switzerland from the airport on the day of arrival for a flat rate; the exception is private rail services. If I recall correctly, I was able to use this ticket all the way to Zermatt; at the very least it will get you to Brig or Visp. (You can also buy return portion to airport if necessary.) I used this type of ticket last year, and it was more economical.

Enjoy!
