Geneva to Brussels
What is the best way to get from Geneva to Brussels by train? Is there a direct train?
|
Hi, and welcome to Fodors' Europe forum!

Don't mean to sound condescending to address you as (apparently) a newcomer, but it IS a newcomer's question - - not that there's anything wrong with that.

You'll probably want to learn your ay around the www.raileurope.com website (click on "Search our database of fares & schedules.") - - but I don't advise actually buying any tickets there. There's a hefty mark-up.

It's a five-hour trip; it is a direct train, and quite an expensive one. The real price, if purchased in Europe, will be under $100 (in second class). This comes from the website www.railsaver.com - - good for real price comparisons, but it won't have all the special promotional prices.

If you want to get "into it" even more, then there are the websites for the rail companies of each country.

http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/misc/timetabl.html (note no "www")

Best wishes,

Rex
Rex gave you quite a long winded answer! Yes, there's a Thalys train running daily, leaving Brussels Midi at 7 pm (actually 7:01 pm) and getting into Geneva a minute after midnight. The Thalys also travels from Geneva to Brussels twice a day, one train leaving at 6:52 am and another at 8:52 am.
FYI, the Thalys system is a network of special high speed trains serving several countries, but its most frequent runs are Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam (and back). Their web site is www.thalys.com and you can search in English.
The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Table 14a shows just one direct train a day, a fast buffet car express called a Thalys train, from Geneva at 0652 on weekdays to Brussels at 1150, and at weekends two hours later. The second class single fare in January was 148 euros.

Ben Haines, London
