Gellert Hotel
To whom it may concern!

Today (September 10) in the morning a huge water-pipe built in 1911 broke through on the Gellert square next to the famous Gellert Spa Hotel. The water was running for almost 3 hours. The pressure was so high that it was throwing the cobble-stones through the Hotel roof and the water even hit the rooms on the 3d floor. About 26 room were damaged. All the guests were evacuated and moved to other Hotels. The Hotel is supposed to be ready for any new guests in a week. The Thermal Bath is going to be closed for at least a month. The manager of the Hotel told the reporters that last time the Hotel was hit that badly during the Second World War in 1945.

The Rudas Bath is closed as well, because it has the same thermal water supply as the Gellert.
I am visiting Budapest for 3 days and brought my swim suit all the way just to visit the Gellert Baths. Was so disappointed to hear of this explosion. Is there an alternative in town that is the equal of the Gellert?

We stayed at the Gellert in July, 2002 for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. At that time, the square immediately outside the hotel was in the process of being dug up - we now know the outcome. The hotel is very much "old world". That's what appealed to us. The size of the rooms varies considerably. We had one of the larger rooms. We paid 214 Euro's (2 adults + child) per night. The room was air-conditioned (a rarity in older hotels) and was incredibly large. Probably 30 x 30 feet. Our view was stupendous - we faced the Danube. (For those on a budget, single rooms probably start at 65 Euros. Check their website - Danubius hotel group.) The room rate also included access to the baths. These are wonderful. There is an outside wavepool. There are numerous baths inside - co-ed and divided by sex. My favourite was the separate women's area where there were two baths - one 36 degrees and the other 38 degrees. The hotel is well situated. It's immediately by a bridge. Once you cross this, you reach the main market building. The pedestrian shopping street (Vaci ut) starts here. In summary, the hotel (and baths) are totally charming and the hotel has location, location, location. I'd be back in a flash. (Remember that with the rooms, the price determines what you get).
