Gelatto or cooking classes in Sicily
 

We will be spending a week in Sicily, just south of Taormina at the end of May. Our group consists of 10 adults and 5 children. Does anyone know of a class where we could learn to make gelatto?

That doesn't really make sense, gelato isn't a Sicilian product or specialty, it comes from around Bologna or maybe Florence. They have classes in Bologna at a gelato university. So it would make as much sense to take classes in the US from people who've been to that school. Besides, I think you need special equipment. It's not just a recipe.

jmv50, I have no first-hand info for you but cooking classes including gelato come up when I Google the subject.

I did a google search for "cookery classes in Taormina" and came up with quite a few options but none of them involving making gelato or granita which is a very popular water ice made in Sicily.

Seems it would be a bit over the top to teach someone to make a granita. And as Christina mentioned, gelato is not "native" to Sicily, so I would imagine in a country as region-specific culinarily as Italy is that find a class teaching how to make gelato would be difficult if not impossible.

Gelato may not be native to Sicily but they sure do love to eat it there. The best gelato I have ever had was in Palermo.

It would be better to find a class in someone's home where they would have equipment available to everybody and not the special machine they have in gelato workshops. If you can expand your search to include cannoli or savories such as arancini, you will have a lot of options.
