Gelato

Does anyone know where you can buy Italian quality gelato here in San Diego?
We have a "Little Italy" section near Old Town but I haven't found a shop with Rome quality gelato.
That's San Diego CA.

This is a question for chowhound.com. There are lots of people on that board with good "food" answers!

hi don,
There's a shop called "Gelato Vero" that everyone seems to rave about. It's downtown SD, Washington and India (if I remember correctly). I haven't actually tried it yet (although I only live a few min away!!!)...so let me know!

hi
If you're into the culinary arts at all, very good gelato can be made at home if you have an electric icecream maker. There are good recipes (with user comments) at epicurious.com

Don...nope, but if you come to San Mateo, I can point you to the best gelato I've ever had; that after 20 days of gelato in Italy. Who'd have thought I would have to travel 14,000 miles to find it was just 10 blocks from my house?

oops!
Sorry, I didn't realize I was still in the Europe forum when I posted my original message. I should have posted elsewhere.
Now that I'm here I will reply to those kind enough respond to my question.
welch: I tried chowhound .com Lots of recipes there.
craisin: Found it. The address for Gelato Vera is 3753 India. I will try it this week.
elaine; I just purchased a Cuisinart ice cream maker. I tried my hand at making gelato but since I have trouble even boiling water the results were less than spectacular. The Italians must have a secret recipe.
Ramblero; Thank's
We spent 3 weeks in Italy in 2001 and had gelato every day. I miss it.
We will be in York, Chester and Edinburgh in Sept/Oct.
Can any one recommend a good place to buy Italian quality gelato in those cities?

Maybe up have alrady tried Gelato Vero. I did, and it was good. Now keep in mind that I have not yet had Gelato in Itlay. That will happen in about 12 days (can't wait)

Ramblero: please tell! San Mateo is within driving distance...

Betsy Aug 30th, 2004 07:29 PM

Ramblero! Here's another request for your gelato info in San Mateo. Oh please share. Maybe Bay Area Fodorites should converge there.

mjmo Aug 30th, 2004 07:41 PM

Okay, I live in San Mateo and I'm scratching my head...I know there's Yummy Yogurt down the street, but I don't think that's it. Come on, where is this orgasmic gelato?

The 'Gelato Vero' is at India/Washington in San Diego and the quality is good.
They don't have as many flavors as you will find in Rome but it is delicious!

Thanks for the tip on Gelato in San Diego. My daughter spent most of her summer in Italy, eating (gelato) her way through the country. Although I haven't been to Italy yet-that's my next trip-I did just get back from Paris where I had the gelato at Amorino. Many think it is as good as they get in Italy. So I am also anxious to find a good gelato shop. I tried a place in Newport Beach yesterday and wasn't impressed. I live in San Diego area but am in sales and travel all over Southern California. I will definitely try Gelato Vero soon. If anyone knows of good gelato in Orange or Los Angeles counties, I would love to try them too. Now if I can just find a bakery that has decent pain au chocolate!!

I do not believe you can get commercially produced *real* gelato in the USA b/c in Italy it is made with raw eggs as an ingredient. In the USA no food containing raw eggs is allowed to be sold b/c the eggs here are subject to salmonella contamination whereas, apparently, in Italy chickens, and by extension eggs, do not carry the salmonella bacteria.

Ramblero Sep 4th, 2004 10:23 AM

Betsy....Pistachio!!!! (That's all I've had and it is head and shoulders better than any I've had anywhere.) Deb says the others are equally as good.
