GBHP-rough cost of parking fees at sites?

I have been looking at all the different places we may wish to visit with the pass and was curious to know about parking fees, I gather the pass covers our admission but not the parking - do a lot of the more visited sites have parking fees? And what would be a rough price? I am guessing this could add up - I am trying to do a rough budget for our 3 weeks of touring.

This is going to depend very much on which attractions you visit. Many sites (especially National Trust and English Heritage) have free parking, since they prefer to take money off you just once.

Sites in Central London are very unlikely to have any parking - free or otherwise. If you are worried about this (and I think you are fretting far too much), then you should check the websites for each attraction you may want to visit.

No expert on the GBHP, I'm puzzled by your question.

The normal policy at all out of town sites (whoever operates them) is that admission prices include parking. City centre sites don't have parking(and, except for disability, you'd be mad to want it)

I can't find any reference to the policy you cite on the GBHP site. Are you getting confused by some bit of legalese somewhere covering GBHP's arse against people nutty enough to expect free parking at the Tower of London?

I should have stated that we will be using the pass around Yorkshire, Lakes District, Wales and Cotswolds.

I wasn't cited any policy, just couldn't find a reference to parking fees at some of the sites we wish to visit. I just wanted some clarification about whether we would have to pay for parking, that's all.

Not fretting at all, just curious to know what to expect however it sounds as if parking is included so that's all I wanted to know.

Thank you all for your replies.

Actually, the National Trust is beginning to introduce parking fees in addition to entrance fees at some of its sites, payable by non-members. so you would presumably escape those, as you would the fees at other places where your pass is valid.

enjoy your trip!

Some NT sites have a pay and display car park, which is free for members with the appropriate sticker on their car. But that is mostly for open air sites (like Runnymede for instance), not houses and their gardens.

"<i>"I wasn't cited any policy, just couldn't find a reference to parking fees at some of the sites we wish to visit."</i>"

Because the VAST majority don't have any such fees.

None of hte places we visited in Scotland in 2007 had parking fees. We didn't drive to any of the GBHP properties in England on that trip (went by public transport) so I can't comment on those. I suspect that the vast majority of sites will not have parking fees in addition to admission fees.

Maudie, you might want to check the websites for the places you plan to visit. If there are separate parking fees, they'll be listed there.

Maudie--Probably a good idea to have plenty of change handy, anyway. (Don't ask me to specify what I mean by "plenty"!) Might want a postcard or drink or something small that you can't use a debit/cc for.

But to add to the specific info--What we found about parking at GBHP places is that a few (most?) were free and a few were "pay and display" for which you will need some change. Then I THINK all the places that we had to pay (which weren't many) when we showed the pass at the people-entrance, we got a refund for the parking by showing the receipt. I know for sure at Birdoswald this was so (I remember because it involved some walking up and down--go to entrance to get change because we didn't have any, DD back to car to buy display thing and put it on dash, DD didn't bring the other receipt with her, DD back to car to get receipt so could get refund!)

yes Maudie - change is always useful! for postcards, newpapers, sweets, !, car parks [mostly take silver, not bronze, though some take c/cards as well now, or you can even pay via your mobile phone] and ALWAYS have your GBHP handy to show at the entrance to properties.

don't worry about flanner - he's always like that. think of him as the virtual equivalent of the grumpy old man in the corner. it wasn't personal.

Not wanting to de-rail this thread at all. But am curious to know whether the cadw Explorer Pass is just as great a deal if one is only visiting Wales? The price seems amazingly good to me, but I hear much less about it on this forum (likely because most people are visiting a larger area than just Wales).

Hi guys, thanks so much for your replies. Sounds like its a bit hit and miss so we will go with the flow. I did look at some of the websites but couldn't see anything relating to parking fees, that is why I asked the question. Where I live the parking fees at some places are getting fairly horrid. We will make sure we have change ready to go.

And thank you to the moderators for removing the "nasties".

Annhig, thanks again!
