Gay-Friendly Italy?

Iíve not yet been to Italy. Iím a single gay man in his mid-thirties and Iím traveling alone so Iíd like to go places where I can meet other guys like myself. Which Italian cities would have nightlife for me, and which would be the most popular? According the Wikitravel, only Bologna and Milan have a thriving gay scene. Is that true? What about Rome?

All the big cities will have 'some' gay scene - certainly Rome and Florence does as well as the two you mention. I'd suggest buying a guide book such as Time Out which will give you a decent outline of the places to go in these cities. Might not be in the same league as San Fran or Brighton, but it'll be there.

I agree with Kate. the Sparacus Guide might also be a possibility.

Milan certainly has some gay nightlife.

be aware that many gay men still reside at home with relatives..but that's a phenomenon I've seen in other European cities, too.

Universal,

Allow me to direct you to the Rough Guide to Italy. This well written and researched series reports that Bologna, Milan, Turin, and Rome all have "well developed gay scenes." In addition, the resorts of Rimini and Taormina both have spiagge gay (gay beaches).

For more detailed information, the Rough Guide suggests Italy's national gay organization:

www.arcigay.it

and:

www.gay.it

Best of luck.

Venice, too.

You can get online guidebook info by typing, say, gay Rome, into google.

If you visit Rome in summer time, you'd have fun at http://www.gayvillage.it/ from the 26th of June to the 20th of September. Rome has plenty of gay clubs, too.

Enjoy Italy
