Gaudi's Gift
 

The July issue of Smithsonian has an excellent article entitled "Gaudi's Gift", about Barcelona's yearlong celebration spotlighting the genius of Antoni Gaudi.<BR><BR>Gaudi was the primary reason I always wanted to visit Barcelona and when I finally did, a little over two years ago, I found his buildings even more stunning in person. What an amazingly creative mind! <BR><BR>It was on June 7, 1926 that Gaudi was struck down by a trolley while crossing Gran Via boulevard. Having no idenitification and looking very disreputable, he was taken to the public ward of a Barcelona hospital. The next day, when he was identified, it was suggested he move to a private clinic but he refused, reportedly saying "My place is here, among the poor." He died a couple of days later, just two weeks before his 74th birthday: tomorrow, June 25th.

I visited Barcelona when I graduated from architectural school (many years ago, alas). The works of Gaudi are singular and decidedly Spanish with a Quixotic feeling. He's always been one of my heros.

Capo:<BR>Why not plan to visit Barcelona this year? The celebration is fantastic! Several buildings ususally closed to the public are open to visitors (and many other sites charge reduced admission rates) if you buy the "ruta Gaud&iacute;" guide.<BR><BR>I have been to Barcelona at the end of may, and the lines were huge, but every minute you are waiting is worth it!<BR><BR>Gaud&iacute; hs been buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia, just the spot he would have wished: in his church, dedicated to the poor, with his work being carried on around him.<BR><BR>Phil.<BR><BR>

I'd love to visit Barcelona this year to partake of this celebration, but I just spent a month in Italy & France this spring, so, unfortunately, it's not too likely. Glad to hear you made it there and enjoyed the celebration. <BR><BR>It would almost be worth it just to see the interior of Casa Batlo (which is normally closed to the public); was that one open?
