Gatwick train to Russell Square
 

I see Gatwick Express offers a 4-for-2 offer that with four adults would cost 8.75 pounds each.
That seems cheaper than the Southern or FCC fares, which are showing as about 10 to 17 pounds each.
There are only two of us, so I'm wondering what the chances are of coaxing two strangers to make up the foursome to get the deal. Any thoughts on that?

Well - both of those trains only get you to Victoria Station which is not at all near Russell Sq - and not on a direct tube line either.

Look at taking the First Capitol Connect train from Gatwick to King's Cross and be a very short cab or tube or ride away.

Oh - and the fare is less than even the 4 for 2 fare on the GEX . . . . .

Janis, when I go to the Gatwick Airport site and click on the transportation options, first, it says the cheapest fare on First Capitol Connect is 10.9 pounds, which is more than the half-price GEX ticket. But more importantly, I can't figure it out -- it seems to say that from Gatwick to London Kings Cross, you have to change at Victoria Station and take the TUBE to King's Cross. I'm very confused (and would like to get unconfused and save some money) BTW, my ultimate destinatin is the Holborn tube station.

The First Capital Connect train goes to St. Pancras, not King's Cross. You can walk to Russell Square from there. If you take the Gatwick Express you'll have to take the tube from Victoria.

Oops, not sure why I thought you wanted Russell Square. You could walk to Holborn, too, but not with luggage.

I meant St Pancras - but the rest of the info res short cab or tube trip is the the same (St Pancras is right next door to King's Cross.) The train will also stop at Farringdon, which would also be a short cab ride from Russell Sq. The fare to St Pancras is £8.90.

OK, First Capital Connect to St. Pancras. I see that King's Cross and St. Pancras are connected - how far is the walk to get on the Picadilly line once you get off the train from Gatwick? Or should I get on a different line and change? (My daughter has some mobility issues, just coming off surgery for a broken ankle - hopefully she'll be much much better by then, but she's just starting to walk again).

Dmlove: If your daughter has mobility issues - forget about the tube. Honest - it is a very short cab ride and you can walk out from the mainline train platforms to the taxi rank w/ no stairs.

The tube is almost never the best option for anyone w/ problems walking. Some stations have one walking for full city blocks underground, up and down stairs and up and down escalators and then more walking.

For generally getting around the city, buses will be easier than the tube.

swanny, thanks for the info, but I think we'll use the FCC, too, and then we'll have to take a cab to our hotel (not far) (we would take the tube, but for too many steps and my daughter's foot problem). Have a great trip!
