Gatwick to Heathrow baggage question

We are booked on a flight to Paris where we have to transfer from Gatwick to Heathrow. I think I have a pretty good understanding of how the shuttle system works but now I have another question. How will it work with our bags? Will we claim our bags at Gatwick then check them in again at Heathrow or does the airline do this? I am not comfortable with the idea of trusting American Airlines to get my baggage to another airport in 5 hours. Can anyone tell me how this works? Thanks!

You claim your bags at Gatwick, you take your bags to Heathrow, you check your bags at Heathrow

Same the other direction

So when we check in and our luggage gets tags on it, it will say that it is only going to gatwick? I just didn't want the bags to get lost because the tags said heathrow.

What does your airline say about the booking?

Why would the bags say Heathrow if you are going to Gatwick

NO airline automatically transfers luggage between Gatwick & Heathrow therefore even if they ticket it to your final destination it will still end up on the luggage carousel at Gatwick

AA will not transfer you, your bags, or anything else between London airports. You land at Gatwick, go through UK immigration, claim your bags, go through the customs lines, then out into the world where you get on the bus or airport car service, or the train to Victoria, whatever.. for the ride to Heathrow, whereupon you check bags, go through security, etc. to get to your plane to Paris.

Are your air tickets cast in stone? If you can change them, I'd suggest you take the train from Gatwick to Waterloo to Paris.

You'd probably arrive in downtown Paris sooner, it would be far less stressful, and could even be cheaper. Plus, you would end-run the UK Departure Tax.

<i>p.s.</i> Southern Railway will take you from Gatwick to Waterloo East for &pound;10 on a DaySave pass - up to four adults for &pound;20.

Robes - you are more than slightly out of date w/ your info. The Paris train doesn't go to/from Waterloo anymore . . . . .

Robespierre Jan 20th, 2008 08:17 AM

Ouch. That's what I get for PUI.

Okay - First Capital Connect Gatwick to St P, Eurostar to Paris - as janisj could have told you. But informing a traveler was not her purpose.

janisj Jan 20th, 2008 09:13 AM

I didn't tell the OP about taking the Eurostar since obviously they already have their tickets through LGW/LHR. You posted incorrect info about a mode of transport that the OP can't use. Why muddy the waters when they have tix already booked? The info about transferring to LHR was already posted by several people.

that is why I didn't explain about getting from LGW to St Pancras . . . .

<i>obviously they already have their tickets through LGW/LHR</i>

That's why I asked if their air was cast in stone. I'd cancel LHR-CDG and book the train in a heartbeat to avoid transferring from Gatwick to Heathrow and queue for check-in and queue for passport and queue for security and queue for...
