gatwick or heathrow

Which airport is more convienent to get to and from London? I am looking for mass transit, the easiest and cheapest. It has been 20 years since I have been to Gatwick and only tranfered through Heathrow.

Heathrow is closer to central London than Gatwick. And the cheapest (easy, but not necessarily the easiest) way to get into town is the tube direct from Heathrow.
The easiest form of transportation -- being met by a private car -- is certainly not the cheapest. So you can't get cheapest and easiest all at once from either airport.

I have travelled into both airports, and have taken a high speed train into the city. From Heathrow it's the Heathrow Express and takes you into Paddington Station. The Gatwick Express takes you into Victoria Station.
Nice and comfortable, you can buy tickets in the airport before boarding. It took about 15 minutes each way from Heathrow when I was there in March.
Hope this helps.

Actually it is six of one - half dozen of the other. Go into whichever one gives you the best fare/points/etc.

The train from LGW is most effective for Victoria and east central London. The train from LHR works best for Paddington and west central London. The LHR tube is convenient for anyone staying near a Picadilly line station - but not convenient for anyone else because it means changing lines with luggage which is almost never fun.

LHR is huge and frantically busy. LGW is smaller and easier to negotiate.

But both are convenient to pretty much anywhere in the center.

The cheapest airport is dependent on your airfare. Assuming airfare is the same, LHR is the cheapest if you take the tube. LGW by Connex is a bit cheaper than the Gatwick Express and ony takes a few more minutes. Connex is the local train.

The absolute cheapest is probably LCY. However, only a few European flights go to London City. From there, you could walk to the Docklands on a nice day or take the bus for 70p to £1.
