GATWICK - nee hotel near Gatwick about $50

Any suggestions on a hotel/motel near Gatwick airport for a Monday, Sept 16. We fly out at 11 a.m.

Fifty bucks isn't much to work with in the greater London area. While there are some places to stay in the general area of Gatwick, my own choice would be to pick up the Gatwick Express from Victoria Station in the morning. It would save you moving your stuff an extra time.

Here's a cool site to look for hotels though:

Happy Contrails!

Could you possibly have meant 50 GBP? We could make recommendations at that rate. But $50 is only about 32GBP - a very tall task indeed.

Janis: I did mean $50 but I guess that can't be found in the UK and near a airport. I search here for Horley and did find Copperwood and they are charging 50 GBP with shuttle to the airport. Does that include the VAT tax? If so I can understand the price. In the states we would pay $50 for a very nice motel but that doe not include tax.

Jim: Thanks for the suggestion. Please see my Horley post we will be coming from Lymington.

Can't believe I'm recommending this, but we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Crawley (about 15 min. from Gatwick) the night before we flew home from London Gatwick in November. We are usually staunch B&B supporters, but with a toddler, you always worry about who you'll be disturbing. Make sure you get the Express, not the normal HI which is far more expensive. We paid 35 pounds but that was a discounted rate because a family member works for BT. My husband thinks the regular rate was about 45 pounds, which is over your $50 rate, but still a good deal and includes continental breakfast (which was cereal--hot and cold, toast, juice, yogurt). Here's the contact info: Express by Holiday Inn, Haslett Avenue East, Three Bridges, Crawley, West Sussex RH10 1UG. Tel: 44 (0)1293 525523. www.hiexpress.co.uk. We thought it was a steal.

Natalie - you should be ashamed of yourself! ;-) (I AM kidding - the Holiday In express is actually fine - but I don't think they provide an airport shuttle, at least they didn't used to)

Marge - I don't know from here if VAT is included - but they have to clearly state whether tax is included or not. I'd guess it is tho'.

And where on earth in the States do you pay $50 for a very nice motel - I want to go there.

Hello Marge,

I'm not sure if you will be able to find anything for 50 dollars a night
including shuttle and VAT, so
I will suggest a place that I believe is reasonable and very much in line with the prices in the area for guest houses or b&bs.

I found a very friendly welcome, pretty & comfortable rooms and a delicious cooked breakfast at the Vulcan Lodge in Horley. (It's down the street from the Copperwood.) I have stayed there once before and will return in July. Their web site is www.vulcan-lodge.com and their phone is (44)1293 771522. A double or a twin is 55 pounds a night. Their prices include VAT but not transport to Gatwick. They will arrange for a taxi for you.
I know this is not the price you are looking for but I hope this will be helpful and another place to consider.
Good luck!

I have two suggestions:
1. People have had success bidding for London airport hotels on Priceline.com, some even less than $50. September may be a bit further off though.
2. Contact the following consolidators specialising in airport hotels, widely used by travel agents and public in UK:

Hi Folks, I found Prinsted Guest House from the website Jim posted for 47 GBP ensuite w/VAT and transportation to the airport and English breakfast.

Janis: Really you can and they usually have a light breakfast. We look for a AAA or AARP rate or pick up the highway discount books that cover several states like roomsaver.com. In June we have at $40 rate for La Quinta, very, very nice motel.

Natalie & Alex: thanks for the websites in case hubby con't stay at the B&B.

Try the Hotel or Motel Europa near Gatwick, I am sure its less than 50 and a free airport shuttle, a resturant, also the bar serves food when the cafe is closed, and nice rooms, but not near anything but the hiway. Go Ahead Vacations uses it for their day rooms on flights that have long layovers as we did last year going from SFO to Kenya, connecting at Gatewick. Good Luck Buck

There are two Millenium Copthorn hotels near Gatwick. Normally they are pretty expensive, however, we are planning a trip for July and when I last checked they were running some pretty terrific summer specials - I don't know what they would have for Fall - But they look like lovely hotels with very reasonable rates.
