Gatwick Express or Southern or South West Trains?
What are the pros and cons of these GTW transfers? Are there other carriers?
I remember seeing a 2-for-1 coupon for London attractions offered by some train line, but I don't know anything about it. Anybody fill me in? We're going to Jersey in September on a Friday at 6:25. Will the airport train be a sardine can? If so, how early should we go to avoid being crushed? |
gatwick express is never a sardine can in my experience but the others, much cheaper trains can be and take much longer.

Your choice should depend partly on where you're staying. From Victoria, both Gatwick Express and Southern trains go every fifteen minutes. The Southern trains do not take "much longer", averaging 35 minutes, compared with 30 minutes for the Gatwick Express. You didn't specify what time you're going: does the plane leave at 6:25 am or pm, or is that the check-in time or the time you're leaving London?

I stand corrected - Geoff is right some Southern trains go non-stop in 32 minutes vs Gatwick Expresses 30 mins. I was thinking more of Thameslink trains, etc. where you may have to change. Didn't realize Southern had such good nonstop gatwick-victoria service. I've not ridden Southern Gatwick trains - Geoff are they are comfy as Gatwick Express ones seem to be?

That would be an 18:25 flight (BA wants us there at 17:25, which I feared would put us right in the thick of the commuter rush).
We'll be coming from Marble Arch, so Victoria would be our first choice, but London Bridge isn't that much further (and it's right on the Jubilee from Bond Street). Southern on a £10 Daysave sounds good at this point - I think the londontrainoffers.co.uk coupons are history. |
You might check out Time Out London, in stores in US like Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc. as they recently, a few months ago, had adverts about 2 for 1 Gatwick Express tickets and you only had to reference the add.
