gatwick airport
Flying from Newark NJ to Heathrow or Gatwick. Gatwick is a lot cheaper. What are the pluses and minus? Cost and time to get to London? Transportation to London?
What is the difference in airfare IOW please define the term "a lot cheaper."
gatwick has the gatwick express: a train that will take you into london. i don't recall the exact cost or schedule but it couldn't have been more than a few pounds (i'm pretty cheap) and it had to be about 30 minutes travel time to victoria station.
I've had significant delays at Heathrow and not Gatwick, but that might be the luck of the draw. You can economize on transport with whichever airport. I'd choose whatever one gets you there on the best schedule for the best price.
Minuses - direct train from LGW to Victoria takes 15 min. longer and costs £0.50 more than train from LHR to Paddington. Total trip time/cost may vary according to where in central London you're going.
Pluses - everything else. No brainer. My opinion. |
I would fly to Gatwick, even if it takes a little longer to get to London and costs a little more.
You're only looking at an extra 15 minutes on the train and a few extra bucks to get into the city. Go for the best price and schedule.
I NEVER let the airport factor into my London flights - I just about always take the cheapest one. That being said, if I did base it on airport - it would be Gatwick every time.
actually - it would really be London City - but since no North America flight land there it isn't an option . . . . .
All of this to save $20?
the OP said the LGW flight "is a lot cheaper". Sure hope he doesn't mean $20 . . . .
The Gatwick Express will get you to Victoria Station for £14.
Southern Trains will get you to Victoria Station for £9. Other train lines will get you to other stations in London. Do you know where you will be staying? |
No downside at all outside of a little longer train ride when compared to Heathrow. If you want to save few bucks, take the Southern Train. Gatwick Expess is about 5BPs more expensive but it's only about 2-5 minutes quicker.
Which train to get from Gatwick depends on where you are staying.
For example if staying near Trafalgar Square the best train option would be train to London Bridge, wait at the same platform for a few minutes, train to Charing Cross. It would be quicker and cheaper than going to Victoria & Tube / Bus / taxiing it See the journeyplanner on www.tfl.gov.uk |
