Hello, I am planning on flying into Gatwick from Madrid on 7/5 at 8:30 am on Veuling and flying out to Austin at 10 am on a separate ticket through Norwegian air. After doing research into it this is possible I found out they both are in the South terminal. Is this 90 minute connection time doable? Will we have to go though customs? We will only have carry ons.

No one on earth can tell you if you can make this flight. What of you flight is delayed? Or . . . it is on time but no gate is available?

But - asking now after the tickets are booked (I assume) is a little late. Could you make it - sure. Could you miss the connection - sure.

Why build in such a tight iffy at best connection time? Why not fly from Madrid day before and stay in airport area hotel? Is your Norwegian Air ticket non-refundable?

We fly fairly often through Gatwick south terminal usually between British air and Norwegian and in general, it should be do-able, but if you haven't yet booked, I would try to leave a bit more time, especially for passport control, which can be unpredictable. We travel on an EU passport, so I can't tell you if a US passport takes longer if that is what you will be using.

If you are on separate tickets I believe you will need to get your luggage and re-check in?

I would never chance it. It took 45 mins for my luggage to come out after a flight 2 weeks ago.

90 mins connection is too short IMO and I regularly have separate tickets, I wouldn't be comfortable with such little time. Even if you only have carry-on, it seems you will have to go thru immigration and then to the check in desks landside. Your documents will have to be checked since you are flying to the US.

There is no effing way I'd do a 90-minute connection on separate tickets, even with only carryons (Jamikins, read the OP's post). I don't like doing 90-minute connections on the same airline. Too easy for something to foul up.

Still wouldn't feel comfortable with a 90 min layover.

The question IS: flying in from Madrid and out to the US, do you have to go through Customs/Immigration or not?
Nobody here has answered that question definitively.

Yes they will have to go thru immigration and customs for entering the UK from Madrid. Once landside they need to check in at Norwegian desks where a further doc check will take place. At least, that’s how I believe it will work based on the info from Norwegian Direct to Gate info, which you can’t do for flights to the US.

If transiting only why would one have to go thru U.K. Customs and Immigration - if staying in transit area? Not saying you are not right just asking why?

@PQ - why don't you ask the US government the same question?

Maybe I’m the one reading the info incorrectly on Norwegian. I read it as meaning you can go direct to the gate without going to the check in desk if you are flying from the Nordics to another European country excluding the U.K which a flight from the U.K. to Austin is not.
Document check is required for travel to the US, some need ESTAs, others need visas, everyone needs to have provided APIS info. Doubt gate staff can do these types of document check. It’s a bit late to turn away passengers at the gate if their docs are not in order.

The OP also asked >> Is this 90 minute connection time doable?<<. That is what I and others tried to answer - there is no earthly way to know because too much is out of the OP's control.

The questions are answered by the link PQ posted. Of course, if the inboard is significantly delayed, all bets are off.

AFAIK Norwegian do not have online check in for US flights and the only way to check in is at the desk or kiosk landside, so the OP won’t have a boarding pass.
