I will need to travel from Gatwick Airport to Yeovil, Somerset. What are my travel options? Train? Bus? I would prefer to rent a car but, at age 80, that seems to be a problem in England, even though I have driven all over England in the past.

There are hourly trains from London Waterloo to Yeovil,takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. Perhaps you could take the Express to London Victoria,then take a cab to Waterloo.

According to www.nationalrail.co.uk, there are other possible connections that would avoid going to into London, and are probably faster.

One is to change train at Clapham Junction. Other has two changes at Guildford, than Woking. All under 3 hours.

A change at Clapham Junction would probably involve a substantial schlep up and down stairs and along either a tunnel with a slope or the overbridge. Changes on the cross-country route might (I don't know the stations) also involve up and down stairs, but I'd be surprised if they're not a bit less stressful.

National Express buses www.nationalexpress.co.uk only seem to offer long journeys (between 5 and 8 hours), of which the best option seems to be the 5 hour journey changing at Heathrow. But there only seems to be one direct bus a day from Heathrow to Yeovil, getting you in about 8.30pm. Otherwise they're offering changes in Bristol or London, taking forever.

So the train in and out of London with a taxi in between looks like much the most convenient, if probably more expensive.

I want to thank those of you who have answered my querey. I'm an American Veteran returning to Luxembourg for some WWII 60th anniversary activities and, while in the neighborhood, wish to also vist English friends: a girl I dated while in the hospital there in 1945, and her family. (She's now a good friend of my wife's).
