Gasthof Stern in Mittenwald?
Just checking to see if anyone has stayed here before and their impressions. We are looking for a nice, clean hotel near the train station in Mittenwald. Thanks!

Hi nicksgirl88,
Mittenwald is mighty small, and you don't really need to be staying close to the train station. I spent five weeks in a vacation apartment near the center of the village, and I think that would be a nicer location. It's great to be able to walk out the door and be in the middle of the action with cafes and stores right there. How often will you be using the trains during your stay? It's about a ten-minute walk from the station to the center of the village, so it's not much of a hassle to do that upon arriving and departing. Yes, it would be a bit unpleasant to do that every day if you planned to do excursions daily -- Have fun! s |
Hi again,
I just checked the location of the Gasthof Stern using google maps, and it looks like a great location, midway between the train station and the pedestrian street. Sorry, I haven't stayed there, but it looks like a great spot. s |
Hi s-
Thanks for the info. The only excursion for the 2 days we'll be in Mittenwald will be the Karwendel cable car. Other than that, we plan on soaking in some Bavarian culture in town. I emailed the Stern but no reply yet. I will try calling them. |
Last month I stayed at Hotel Alpenrose. It is located right on the pedestrian area which is a straight walk on the street directly in front of the station. I think I remember seeing the Stern. It was about 1 short block from the pedestrian area. Like Swandav said, Mittenwald is very small.

Hi again,
The Karwendel cable car runs from within the town, so you don't need to be close to the station for that. If you like the Stern's other qualities (and it does look sweet), then it would be a good bet. Otherwise, I would yes want to be right in the pedestrian zone. The Alpenrose is the place I would have stayed if I had wanted a hotel -- s |
Hi scat and swandav -
I had contacted the Alpenrose - it looks great, but the Stern was cheaper. Plus my German husband liked the idea that it has its own biergarten. :-) I'm sure we won't go wrong with either place. Thanks so much for your insight! |
You can't go wrong just by being in Mittenwald. I love it!
|
nicksgirl88 - If you stay at the Stern, let me know what you thought! We are also considering staying here. Thanks!

Hi MrsJenn - will do! I thought I had emailed them but got no response, so I will try to call them. It looks like a lovely place.

Off topic, but I wanted to rec this charming place. Simple, convivial, and delicious.

I stayed on the pedestrian walk with a room opening over the area, and it had pros and cons. I am light sleeper and the noise from the people hanging out late into the summer evening plus the church bells were more bothersome than I expected. I had an early train so needed to hear my alarm, so ear plugs were not practical. It was stuffy if I kept the window closed. So I started with the window closed, then got up and opened it during the night.
On the other hand, I had a partial view of the mountains and it was convenient to the restaurants. Since I went to a concert in the park, rode the chair lift up for hiking, and rode the train in/out, I walked all over town anyway and could have stayed in any location OK. Just glad I wasn't up the hill to pull my bag up there. I saw lots of vacation homes there and rooms for rent. All of them looked great. |
