Gas prices in Germany

Hello,
We are leaving for two weeks in Fuessen Germany, on the 18th of August. Does anyone know current prices for gas. We are renting
a car and plan to do alot of driving. Any other tips will be helpful too.

Thanks,
Diane

Diane, as of two weeks ago, gas was running about DM 1,58 for regular (per liter). The basics on driving: bone up on the international traffic signs, always drive in the right lane unless passing (and then make it quick), and know the names of the towns/villages you are heading towards, because that's how directions are given, not by N/S/E/W. Blue signs are autobahn, yellow are local highways. It's very easy to drive in Germany because traffic is generally very orderly... just make sure you follow the rules, too.

Depending on what car class you have reserved for rental, try to get a diesel car...diesel fuel is 25% less expensive than regular gas.

The day before yesterday I paid DM 2.01 per liter of unleaded regular. (Autobahn Tankstelle)
We just returned from germany on july 31
The price for regular gas was in the 1.95DM to 2.05DM range per liter.Per the reply from Ann, you have to know the big towns in the direction you are heading as there are no compass directions. The little towns will start showing up on the road signs when you get close to them usually on the distance to the city signs.

Diane: think of it this way. Gasoline will cost you about $4 a gallon. How do you combat this? Drive as if you had an egg under your accelerator. No jack rabbit starts. Brake slowly. Hug the right-hand of the road (the speed demons in their BMWs and Mercedes will clobber you otherwise -- they will flash their lights like crazy and scare the living hell out of you if you get in their lane on the left). Use your credit card to pay for gas wherever you can (helps get you the best rate of exchange). Don't fret. You will have a marvelous time. Just drive very defensively.
