Well just having been there - stayed for a few days and a really neat place nestled at foot of Bavarian Alps - two towns Garmisch and Partenkirchen (with the church) and the Zugspitze hovering overhead - a primo resort - lots of US GIs in town as major bases are nearby - if that's a plus or not - Oberammergau, Munich, Mittenwald, Innsbruck, Mad Ludwig's Linderhof extravaganza castle all neat day trip possibilities. Oodles and oodles of dreamy guesthouses with humungous breakfast and cozy quilts on the beds.

I haven't been in ages. The last time I was there, it was FULL of American service personnel on holiday.
I remember there being several American-type restaurants--Burger King, Wendy's, the American Steakhouse.
The views of the Alps were beautiful. You can take the train to Mittenwald or Innsbruck, which are close by.
I have no idea how Garmisch is during the winter months, as I was there in September.

Anything that would help as far as places to stay for skiing close to the slopes and of course anything thats posted is good.

I don't know what it is like in the winter, but we have had three very pleasant stays there in recent summers. The official town website has a good search function for looking for accomodations:

We have always stayed in the "guesthouse" accomodations (Gasthof or Gästehäuser) and have been very pleased with all but one. There are also nice hotels, but the are more expensive (and less "gemütlich"
. We like the Garmisch side (to the west), with its pleasant pedestrian zone and access to the hiking trails and rural landscape, rather than the Partenkirchen side.
For skiing, you might look for something close to the Alpspitze lift, or the Olympic stadium.

I loved it! I was there in October '04 and the leaves were changing. It is so beautiful. We visited those cute German towns listed in the other posts and Ludwig's castles. There was a festival near our hotel one day and the hotel had a party another.

We stayed in G-P for three days a few winters ago. It was mid-December and there wasn't much skiing or activity going on at the resorts. Some people were complaining that there wasn't as much night-life as they expected. There was a small Christmas market. It made for a nice base to explore other towns in the German Alps and to see the castles. There are a number of places to stay that are near the train station and the olympic stadium.
I look forward to another visit to G-P in the future.

G-P is a great base for the area. There is plenty there and it's not too far from many other places in Germany and Austria.
FYI, not only is there at least one army post in G-P, but there is a new resort for military personnel and their families. Many deployed soldiers who are on R&R spent time in G-P because it is a great deal for them and their families. So, when you see those soldiers around time, don't forget to thank them AND their families for the sacrifices they are making. Sorry, but since my husband is one of those soldiers deployed, I had to throw that in!

Wow, SuQue, an interesting observation. We stayed there a week and never saw an overall difference despite our walking all over both parts. To me, both parts of the town (or the two towns, depending on how you look at it) both has some quaint and traditional buildings as well as some new ones. I guess Garmisch is a little bigger so perhaps it did have more "newer" buildings.
