Garmisch, Fuessen or Mittenwald
I am debating in which of the three towns I should stay. I will not have a car and will be relying on public transport. Any suggestions with the towns or hotels would be appreciated. thank you.

Reindl's in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we stayed last year, is a very nice hotel with a nice restaurant. We rented a car, so it's hard for me to comment on public transport. I believe, Garmisch is a convenient base for visiting all the attractions around.

I've stayed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen without a car and in Mittenwald with a car. Both can been done w/o a car, but suggest you select a hotel near the train station in Garmisch, as it's a good sized town. We made the mistake of staying in Partenkirchen and had to walk quite a bit to reach the train station and bus to Fussen.
You can get to Mittenwald from Garmisch via train in about 20 minutes and Mittenwald is easy to see on foot. Can't recommend the hotel we stayed at in Partenkirchen - wouldn't stay there again for several reasons. We stayed at the Hotel Bicherlof in Mittenwald - it was okay, but really basic and small. It was one of the few hotels open at the time of our visit. The Bicherlof is the annex of the Gastof Alpenrose - we had several good meals at the Alpenrose restaurant during our stay. If I go back to Mittenwald, I'll probably check out the Hotel Reiger - very close to the train station and it looked really nice. Our favorite restaurant in Garmisch is Pizzeria Da Renzo, Rathausplatz 6 - haven't been to Garmisch for a few years, but I assume they're still in business. Have a great trip. |
Hi belav07,
I have to say Mittenwald. Gorgeous village (town) with a beautiful mountain backdrop. From the train station it is just a 5 to 10 minute walk to the old town (pedestrian zone), although both times we stayed here ('05 and '06) we had a car. Mittenwald is only 20 or 30 minutes from Garmisch. We really like Fussen also, but Mittenwald is our favorite. Paul |
Hi belav07,
I also vote for Mittenwald! I was lucky enough to have an apartment there for a month, Dec 06-Jan 07, and didn't have a car. It was a huge slice of heaven! I could just leave my apartment and walk up a mountain, walk to a neighboring village, or take the train to another town (Innsbruck, Garmisch). There is enough shopping and dining to keep you happy right there. Whenever I went to Garmisch, I felt that the town was too big -- too much traffic, too many stores, too many people. Ahhh, lucky you! s |
Hello:
Thank you so much everyone for your valuable input. I am definitely checking out hotel Reiger, it looks great from the website. Best regards B |
Hi again,
Also check out the Alpenrose, a 3-star that's right on the pedestrian center: http://www.hotel-alpenrose-mittenwald.de/alpenrose.html If you'd like a 4-star, the Hotel Post is just next door, also on the pedestrian center. Have fun! s |
Hi B,
We recently stayed at the www.hotel-hechten.com in Fuessen. My notes say that it was very easy to get to, that it was a very nice hotel, had a good restaurant, and that out room (no. 33) looked out at Fuessen Castle (if you look up). We took the bus to Hohwenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. Easy to do. They have a 1/2 board special for 99E pp for two days (total), but you have to eat from the tourist menu (wasn't that terrible). I left a small tip the first night and the bartender gave us the special dessert and a glass of Apricot Schnaps our second night. ((I)) |
