Garmisch - Berchtesgaden driving ?'s please help
Hello ....
I have been pouring over the Michelin map and web for the most direct, fastest drive time from Garmisch to Berchtesgaden. We have booked the tour for Eagles Nest and need to be at the railway station by 12:30. This seems to be about a 5 hour drive?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions and recommendations.

Jane, you don't want to take the "most direct" route through Austria, if that's what you're considering. It will take you much longer and you will have to buy a vignette for the car, unless you already have one. Even then, I wouldn't count on 2-1/2 hours, since you will have to get to the A-8, but that will be by rural highway. To top it off, Obersalzberg isn't in Berchtesgaden, it's east of there, so although it's all beautiful scenery, I would plan on it taking longer: curvy, hilly roads and small towns that will cut your speed, not to mention the possibility of a "stau" or traffic jam on the autobahn. Check viamichelin.com for good info, but if I was me, I'd for sure allow 4 hours. Then you can enjoy the drive!

If you go via Innsbruck, then Garmisch-Innsbruck is one hour (but reserve some more time just in case you get stuck behind a slow truck). Innsbruck-Berchtesgaden via Lofer is two hours (again, reserve some more time).
I tried the shorter itinerary via Bad Tölz only once and it was slower than it looks on the map. The highway section are relatively fast (but do not plan on speeding past Rosenheim), but the connecting section on ordinary road, while very pleasant to drive, turned out to be quite slow. I would say three hours even by this route.
