Garmin Nuvi 50 Map for France

We're looking at buying a Garmin Nuvi 50,but it doesn't come with a France map. Any experience in using this GPS in Cote d' Azur, Provence and Languedoc that makes it worth purchasing the France map add-on? We don't expect to be too much off the usual tourist sites and we are pretty adept with maps.

If you get a Michelin map for these areas you should be all set. I had no problems following a map.

As I told you before when you asked about this - we used the exact model with the French map and it was pretty useless. We used it leaving Nice, driving to Apt area of the Luberon, Avignon, and all around the Luberon. Maps were definitely better way to go.

A GPS is never a replacement for maps. Or shouldn't be. I prefer TomTom to Garmin. The TomTom I had on a 2500 KM route from Nice to Paris never let me down once. With all the extra info you can get from a decent GPS I wouldn't be without one.

Just use maps. They're pretty infallible if you have the up-to-date ones. GPS systems are far from being as reliable as a brain and a map.

>>>GPS systems are far from being as reliable as a brain and a map.<<<

A GPS can give you a lot more info than my old brain can remember! LOL

Do get one. Learn how to use it... the majority of complaints about how bad a GS is are the result of user error or unfamiliarity. I can program my GPS to take me by the route *I* want in advance. I don't leave the route up to the device. Then it does what it's been told. If I deviate from the route it recalculates (silently with a TomTom) and will still tell me how to reach my destination.

Telling someone in an internet forum to not get such a useful device is akin to saying dump your computer and go with a typewriter! LOL

If you have an iPhone, iPad or one of the smartphones using Android, you'll find that Google maps if better than any stand alone standard GPS device.
