Gardens in Tuscany
My husband and I have planned a trip to Tuscany in June 2003. We're traveling with another couple: he's a landscape archetect and she's a garden designer. Can anyone recommend beautiful gardens to visit in Tuscany? We've been to Tuscany several times and stumbled on beautiful private gardens (and some along the side of the road) but this visit, we're on a mission! Thanks so much for your help!

Amanda,
We went to Tuscany last june and gardens were high on the priority list. We loved the fromal garens around Lucca - Villa Reale andGrabau, they are right down the road from one another and about 10 minutes from the walls of Lucca.

Pfanner villa and garden within the walls of Lucca; the gardens of La Foce near the city of Chiusi (you can also rent a house on the estate); the garden of Villa Massei near Lucca, which is owned by Paul Gervais, author of A Garden in Lucca (his villa is also for rent). I have never been but heard that
Pisa has a wonderful botanical garden.
Correction to Pisa: my friends tell me
the botanical garden in Pisa is interesting because it was one of the
first in Europe, but it could use some
refurbishing.

There is a beautiful book: Gardens of Tuscany, buy it.
