Gardens in Cornwall
 

My partner & I are planning a trip to Cornwall in September. My partner is really keen on gardens and gardening, so wants to see some whilst we're there. We plan to see the Lost Gardens of Heligan and was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. We're staying in Mevagissey but have a car.

I loved Heligan, plan at least 3-4 hours if you want to see it all.

You also are very near the Eden Project, a massive group of bio domes and gardens. You could easily spend a day there, www.edenproject.com

You aren't very far from Lanhydrock House and gardens, a National Trust property. I remember the house more than the grounds but think I was there in late October. www.nationaltrust.com/lanhydrock

If you are anywhere near Plymouth/Tavistock area in Devon during your trip I'd recommend the Garden House at Yelverton. Fabulous and all the acers should be in full colour in Sept

There are quite a few great gardens in Cornwall. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are lovely (would definitely go there again) as are the gardens at Lanhydrock House.

oh, how long have you got?

first of all there are the National Trust Gardens:

Trelissick, [the best NT summer/autumn garden in the area IMHO]

Lanhydrock, [a beautiful and interesting house]

Cotehele [a gorgeous situation on the banks of the Tamar - twin with a trip to the near-by Garden House to make a day of it]

Trengwainton - mainly a spring garden, i think.

Glendurgan [ditto]


other gardens:

Heligan - you know about already, very easy to get to from "fishy gissy," [as an old friend of mine used to call Mevagissey] you could almost walk it or go by bus,

Trebah - on the Helford, where the US forces set out from on DD, lovely any time of year

Lamorran House at St. Mawes - a vey interesting mediterranean style garden in a beautiful place, and not too far from Mevagisssey.

Eden - very close to you, definitely go, but consider going in the evening when there will be fewer people and the biomes will be cooler - they can get very hot in the day. nice food in the cafes. also events advertised on the website.

further afield

st. Michael's Mount - lovely gardens on the west of the island - check the website for opening times

Trevarno - lovely "hidden" estate with a walled garden being restored

Trelowarren - ditto - plus top-class restaurant and craft barns.
