I think your safest bet will be to rent a car. Good luck.

Having experienced these kinds of "timed" strikes, I will say that the Italians are spot on with the announced timing of stoppages. If they are posting 2100 hours, then 2100 it will be and at 2101, its all over. But that doesn't help you with a 15-hour wait...I think you'd better rent that car.

First of all, there is an excellent chance that the strike will be called off at the last moment.

Secondly, even if the strike goes forward, there is a very limited number of trains which are "guaranteed". These trains will be identified on the Trenitalia website. They tend to be early morning and early evening commuter trains. So, there is a chance that you might be able to take an early morning train from Rome to Ancona, even if the strike continues.

You might also look into the air schedules between Rome Fiumicino and Ancona.l

Thanks for suggestions,if we rent a car should we start from the airport or termini. How about cost of a day rental verses a flight from Rome...any idea. Will we be able to get any info from airport with regard to train schedule...or in the first place do not even know if the Leonardo Express is affected. With all the help and suggestions coming from all of you,at least mentally we are prepare for either this or that.do you think we will be able to get some help from the airport. Thanks

No hesitation on this one: rent from the airport before you go, like NOW! Get the best rate quote you can check it against flights from LDV to Ancona, but it is actually a very pretty and not too difficult drive.
