Future Trip Planning- Where Can I Still Get Good Liquorice in Europe?

I love the stuff, black, but the sweet not salty stuff. Years ago it seemed available. On the journey last two weeks through Greece, Italy , Czech Rep and Ireland, never saw anything but filled stuff.

Where can I go to get it?

Rick

I know I've had excellent licorice imported from Holland in recent years. I prefer the salty stuff, but I think there's also good sweet-style Dutch licorice.

I've never seen liquorice in France in all my (105+) trips there. Granted, I hate the stuff and was never looking for it, but still, I'm not sure it exists. Why can't you just bring some with you if it's that important to you?

I love licorice and you can just about any sort you'd like in the Netherlands. I've also found some nice versions in Italy. I can't recall specifically buying any in France (though that doesn't mean I haven't, just that I don't recall), but the anise flavor is popular in the form of alcoholic beverages: Pernod, Ricard, st al.

StCirq -- If the OP is in the U.S., it's very sensible to look in Europe for fine licorice. The "grown-up" stuff has, historically, been much more popular and common there than in the U.S.

Yes, I am the OP and I am from the US. This is as good an excuse as any to visit Holland on the next trip. The last time I was there (1977) I recall seeing a lot of it there, but I made the mistake of buying the salty stuff. I ate as much as I could but ended up throwing it away
