Which to stay to spend 5 days in Bavaria area?

I spent 4 days in Fuessen. Mind you, I had only planned to spend 2, but at the time, the weather was crummy everywhere so decided I just might as well stay there. Luckily, the last 2 days brightened up and I was very glad I had opted to stay. I saw the castles on a cloudy day and a sunny day. Fuessen and Reutte are just small towns (Reutte being the smaller of the 2),but lovely and quaint. I took the postal bus to Reutte and spent 1 day which was plenty - it's only about 30 min from Fussen. From Fussen, I took the train to Munich. Email me if you have other questions.

Would you be interested in making homebase in Munich, then day-trips by train to Fussen, Salzburg and other places? That plan worked very well for us last June, with four nights in Munich and using the Bayern Pass. It would give you travel options, in case the weather is bad in any one area. I think 4 nights in Fussen would be way too many. It's beautiful, but one day was plenty for us. Maybe Garmisch has a lot more to offer, though.

Of those 3, I'd pick Garmisch if I had to pick one for a 5 day stay. But it's a nice area to drive in, and I'd split it up--2 or 3 days to the east, and then 2 or 3 days to the west (or vice versa).

Maybe Berchtesgaden and Fuessen-Hohenschwangau. Or Berchtesgaden and Garmisch. Or Salzburg and Garmisch or Fuessen. Both the eastern and western sections have plenty to see for 2 or 3 days.

Fussen, Reutte and even Garmish are all nice little towns. We have stayed in Unter Pinswang (Gasthaus von Schluxen) that is between Fussen and Reutte, just on the Austrian side of the border. It is a great little B&B type place. We have enjoyed that area a lot but I personally would not plan four nights there. There is just too much other good stuff in the area from Mittenwald (the violin maker's village) to Oberammergau, the other Ludwig castles at Chiemsee and Linderhoff, Bertschesgaden, Salzburg, Munich, etc. I think a lot depends on how you are traveling. We have always rented a car but I understand that the trains are very handy and teh Bayern pass could save you money.

donw--either way will work, just a matter of personal preference. Two or three days in a small town is about my limit--other folks can plop down forever.

We originally planned only a couple days in Garmisch, then kept adding until finally we decided we could rent an apartment there for a full week for less than 4 or 5 nights in a hotel, so we did. It was great -- toured out in all directions and the week flew by. Besides it's by far the best town in be in of the three you mentioned.
