Fussen or Hohenschwangau
Without a car, which town should I stay in? We are a young couple and will most likely want to go to Fussen at night for drinks. Does someone have a list of places with castle views?
|
We just came back from Germany and stayed at Hotel Muller in Hohenschwangau which is just next to the ticket office for the castles. Our room had a view of the Neuschwanstein Castle and it was beautiful. The hotel is excellent for touring the castles and we went to Fussen to see the town and it only takes about 10 mins to drive there. But without a car, Fussen might be better for you since there is really nothing to do after 6 at Hohenschwangau. I did see bus stop so there might be buses going between the 2 places.

With no car and wanting something to do at night, stay in Fuessen--though even Fuessen is no Las Vegas when it comes to things to do 'til the wee hours of the morning.
However, I would recommend that you do rent a car. I'm not a guy who likes driving at all, and I have very little interest in cars as anything except a way to get from here to there. But when planning our trip to Germany 2 years ago, it quickly became apparent to us that we'd be able to see and experience a lot more with a car than without one. And it turned out to be so. We used trains for the first part of our trip (FRA to Bamberg to Munich). Then rented a car for the rest of the trip which included no crowded cities/towns. It worked very well. And we stayed in Hohenschwangau. |
I agree that this area is best enjoyed by car, however you can still make the most of your time without one.Bus service to the surrounding area is good, and the one to the castles takes you to the T.I.office at the main parking lot.
You might be best served staying in Fussen if you are looking for something to do at night. This is not a party town, but if you enjoy quiet evening strolls, or a few biers at an outdoor restaurant, then this is a good place. Here is a site for possible accommodations in Fussen and the surrounding area. However, if you want a knock out view of Neuschwanstein all lit up at night, then I highly recommend the Pension Weiher located directly below the castle. Just go to Google and punch up Pension Weiher, then click on the comments from "Ben's Bauernhof" from a few folks who have stayed there. http://www.tourismus-bayern.com/schw...en/betrieb.htm |
Your best castle view accommodations are located in Hohenschwangau...
The Schloss Hotel Lisl is expensive but offers a nice view of Neuschwanstein - http://www.bensbauernhof.com/schloss...schwangau.html The Hotel Müller is less expensive and also has a nice view - http://www.bensbauernhof.com/hotelmu...schwangau.html Your best bargain with a view is the Haus Weiher - http://www.bensbauernhof.com/pensionweiher.html There is bus service to Füssen with buses running almost hourly (8 minute ride). Usually bus service back to Hohenschwangau is hourly until about 7:15 pm. After that there is only one other bus back and that around 10:30 pm. Of course you could always take a taxi or walk if necessary. Two possibilities if you stay in Füssen - Hotel Sonne (which has a nice Biergarten) - http://www.bensbauernhof.com/hotelsonnefussen.html Suzanne's B & B is a winner and would be my recommendation if you decide to stay in Füssen - Ben http://www.bensbauernhof.com/featuredbnb.html |
Another nice, inexpensive place in Hohenschwangau right under Neuschwantstein:
http://www.albrecht-neuschwanstein.de/index2.html Nice size rooms with modern private baths, free parking, breakfast, and walking distance to the ticket center. |

My husband and me were going to stay at Hotel Alstad Zum Hechten for 3 nights, we are not night people, we like to go during the day and crash at night so now reading all your comments is it suggested that we stay closer to the castle. We will have a car. We'll be arriving late so the first day will be kind of a wash, the second day we were going to spend one day at the castle and the other exploring all of the area. Don't mean to be butting into someone else's post but I also didn't want to do another post with the same subject.

Suze,
We loved Fussen and stayed at zum Hechten twice. Great place. If you do stay there, ask for a room with a balcony. We had a view of the Fussen castle. Very nice at night with it light up. Ludwigs Castles are less than 10 minutes from there. Paul |
My husband and I just returned from Germany 3 weeks ago. We are young 30's and stayed in Fussen. Hohenschwangau has great views of the castle but we found Fussen to be bigger and more to do. Neither is a big 'club/bar' type of town but Fussen definitely has more open/to do than Hohenschwangau.
We stayed at Suzannes B&B. My husband and I did not have an enjoyable stay there (I posted a review on Trip Advisor). This was just our own experience. I've read mixed reviews. There is a super restaurant in Fussen. I'm at work so I don't have the name of it handy but if you are interested, please let me know and I will look tonight. |
The schedule of buses between Füssen and Hohenschwangau is at http://www.rvo-bus.de/site/rvo__bus/...nhaenge/78.pdf. It looks like the 10:30 PM bus is a "call-up-shared-taxi". Does anyone know anything about them. What might the fare be? It's only about 4 miles.
