Yes airport if driving away from Munich or around it.

Sounds like you are arriving from a USA-originated flight(s). How jet lagged will you be? Would not recommend picking up a rental car and driving immediately after arrival for any considerable distance.

We have taken the train to Garmisch and rented a car there. We only rented because I had a broken foot and staying at Army base there. It is easy to take the train from the airport.

Hi Macross!
Yes, the Edelweiss Resort is not very well located, at the very end of town, within walking distance of only 1 restaurant outside of base. And it must have been awful to have to manage with that boot for your foot! FWIW, I never recommend the Edelweiss because it's staffed by Americans and sitting on American soil -- I call it ersatz Bavaria. However, they have decided now to adhere to one of the rules that they had been ignoring, and it's now only available for ID card holders who live in Europe -- folks vacationing from the US are not allowed. I hope you've had the chance to enjoy a hotel or apartment in the middle of town! Thanks for your note! s |
No, we are arriving from London. We will have stayed 4 nights in London before flying to Bavaria, so no real danger of jet lag. Our flight lands at 1:40pm.

Perfect timing for driving before rush hour around Munich.

We were in Bavaria in June 2013. They had an extreme heat wave at that time. Everyone kept apologizing for the heat. I was also raised in the south. However, when I was young we didn’t have a/c, so heat really doesn’t bother me too much.
We we stayed at my DIL family’s cottage in the Allgäu. It was very old and without any a/c. My daughter who slept in the top floor/attic complained a little about the heat, but the rest of us were fine. My son and DIL took the train from Munich to the cottage. My DIL’s parents drove the rest of us there. It was a beautiful drive, and as PAL said we could stop at any spot along the way that sparked our interest. It is a lovely region and I hope you enjoy your stay. |
Swandav, we use to stay on the base side in the cabins. We always got the one with the porch facing the mountain. We had some great times staying there. My husband started coming when in the Navy for NATO school so we were in Oberammergau. We have stayed in town. It is cheaper to stay in town and the sofa agreement being enforced has made many see that now.
