Now reading at least 15 dead :(
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...unicular-crash The URL for the story hasn't updated from the original 3 dead, but the story says 15. BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cpqnnllppnpt |
A horrible tragedy. We rode it several times during our visit in 2022. It's incredibly steep.
Just watched the BBC coverage - those poor people must have been terrified. |
Lisbon Funnicular Collapse
Anyone who has been to Lisbon has very likely used this …

There is a thread over on the Europe forum about it.
At least 15 dead. |
Oh my goodness I used this Funnicular.!!!
How Tragic. |
Yes, that was a horrible tragedy. I visited Lisbon last May, along with my daughter, SIL and young granddaughter. We stayed in the Bairro Alto area but didn’t ride on the funicular.

Such a tragedy, I'm so sorry to see this.
|
I have a photo of it from our last evening in Lisbon last year. I can hardly believe this tragedy.
|
All travelers, let's count our blessings. Just imagine that phone call. Or vice-versa: imagine all your calls going to voice mail as you try to reach Portugal.
I am done. the end |
Very tragic.
Never rode the funiculars when I visited. Maybe took an elevator though. Along with the trams, these are charming vintage machines. But they seem quite old which makes you wonder if they’re well beyond their original service life. With the high volume of tourists now coming to Lisbon and Portugal, these older systems may be stressed. |
Now 17 dead. A tragedy.
|
Indeed very sad. I just booked a trip for there this coming Spring. No idea if it would have been on the itinerary.
Things can happen anywhere at anytime. That’s why it’s good to remember our blessings. |
I read all funiculars in Lisbon are shut down for review at this point.
|
Very tragic. The funiculars are novelties for us tourists, but the locals rely on them because Lisbon is so hilly. We have taken them without a care, including last spring, when we rode this one a few times because we bought a pass. Here are photos from near the top and bottom.

I have been literally sick over this accident. Returned from Portugal mid August and I passed this funicular every single day while I was in Lisbon as it was down a few streets from my hotel. Every day my friend and I planned to ride it but it was somehow never the right time for us. We finally ended up riding the one in Porto by the waterfront.
Rest in peace to all the victims - such a horrible tragedy linked to a travel adventure of all things. I just can’t get the site out of my mind. |

Interesting thing that these Lisbon funiculars run on regular streets with public pedestrian walkways to the side of the tracks. The ones I’ve ridden in other countries have dedicated tracks and pathways, don’t cross any walkways accessible by the public.
Of course those other funiculars you pay more, often have to queue up whereas these in Lisbon, you seem to be able to walk up, board and pay a couple of Euros? And you can get on and get off at several points along the pathway? |
