Fun with Kayak
I love using Kayak to find cheap fares, but sometimes it does get a bit wacky.
The other day I decided to look for Star Alliance flights from Amsterdam to Munich for next summer. So, I put in my airports and BOING up comes the Lufthansa flights from AMS to MUC. Then I notice that they are all like 5-10 hours long. When I pop in the details, they are all going from AMS to someplace else, connecting to MUC. Mostly they connected at CDG. I then decided to see what would happen if I put in AMS to CDG. Yep, you guessed it, 10 hour flights, with connections in Munich. In neither case did it show the "direct" flight, even though the direct connection was in the place I wanted to go to with the other itinerary. Ah, gotta love software :-) dave |
I guess you didn't bother to use the controls on the left where you can filter and define exactly what you want. If you de-select the 1-stop option those longer routes go away.
Kayak is very good in the way it gives you control over the selections - layovers, flight time windows, airlines, airports etc. But Kayak is not to be trusted on its own, there are many airlines it doesn't bring up and that can make you miss good options in your planning. |
I have been using Kayak for a long time, I just found it funny how it brought things up...
AMS to MUC, it brings up no direct flights, only connecting, most with connections through CDG. AMS to CDG, it brings up no direct flights, only connecting, most with connections through MUC. It was a glitch, just a funny one. dave |
I quit using Kayak when I discovered www.itasoftware.com

Dukey, What advantage are you seeing to that site over kayak? The search criteria seems to be similar but with substantially less. Right off the bat, it is missing auto-complete for airports. It also seems to give no indication as to which airlines are being searched. I am certainly not opposed to using another search, but the functionality needs to be there. Have you seen any substantial differences in prices or airlines searched? Being in software development, the ITA app seems a bit lacking in the functionality department at first glance. I see why they also post a link for employment opportunities. Of course, if it gets me cheaper airfare, I would use regardless.
