Holy cow, that got my attention!

Chile_Traveller Nov 27th, 2020 02:18 PM

Is this from Postillion Newspaper - or for real?

Macross Nov 27th, 2020 03:39 PM

For real. We were going to ride through there on our way back to Munich but were short on time. The town sign would get stolen often for years.

Funny! For sure didn't know what to expect in this thread.

Thanks to the Wikipedia page on Fucking I have learned that there is a German beer named "Fucking Hell".

I understand that the locals are fed up with all this hype.

If you speak some German, you may be interested in other charming villages, like Hassloch, Kotzen, Gailingen, Freudenstadt........

My fav place to eat in Garmisch is Mukkefuck which from my understanding was faux coffee from WW11. I love their salads. We have been eating there for years and always good. I am so sad this year, bringing out some of my goodies from last year's markets.

Yup their salads are famous! I discovered (after about the 10th visit there with travellers in town) they also have excellent Rösti, which goes nicely with their sparkling wine.

I believe that Mukkefuck means a general mixture of stuff, a melange, a grabbag of ingredients. Which would probably describe "coffee" in postwar Germany pretty well.

Hope you get back here soon!

No, it is not used for a general mixture of stuff. Wikipedia (the German version) actually has a good explanation. (Btw, spelling is usually Muckefuck) They say it comes most likely from French "Mocca faux" and was adapted into German language during the French-German war 1870. Sounds reasonable.

According the the Duden the word Muckefuck was used for weak coffee in the Rhineland in the 19th century.

I use to check in on someone's Oma and she would tell me many stories about the war. She was told to make coffee by some Polish soldiers and it was so bad they spit it on her. It had no coffee beans but she roasted something to make a faux coffee.
