Are you driving? Taking the train?

J62 Mar 26th, 2012 09:57 AM

Best route is train to Florence SMN train station, then taxi to your hotel.

you can see maps at maps.google.com

and train schedules at www.trenitalia.com

Hi J62, do I have to book the train ticket in advance?

Jadan_Tan Mar 26th, 2012 10:07 AM

Hi Mimar, will be taking train. = )

J62 Mar 26th, 2012 10:13 AM

No, it is not necessary for you to book the train ticket in advance.

But, you can save some money by doing so, as long as you know in advance which specific train you want to take. Look for the so called mini fares as you go through the booking process.

Your next question will be 1st class or 2nd class. In my opinion 2nd class on these trains is quite comfortable and perfectly fine. You will get differing opinions on 1st vs 2nd class here on fodors.

Hi J62, Do you have the link to book the train?

J62 Mar 26th, 2012 10:47 AM

either

www.fsitaliane.it/lefrecce.html

or

www.trenitalia.com

same trenitalia company, just different portals.

Jadan_Tan, if when you arrive in Venice, you are at the Piazzale Roma, go ahead and stop at the train station and get your ticket to Florence in advance. If you do not speak Italian, there is an information office and the folks there can help you. It will be more comfortable if you take a train with reserved seats. 2nd class is fine, but 1st class in Eurostar is a fun splurge.

As J62 says, in general, you can purchase your train tickets on the same day without any problem. If it is during Easter holidays, it doesn't hurt to book in advance.

Using google, it looks like it's 3.5 km from Florence train station to your hotel. I too would take a taxi. A bus number is indicated but with luggage, it's just simpler and faster to taxi.

Thanks, J62.
In the link, www.trenitalia.com I couldn't find the station such as
1) Venice Santa Lucia
2) Santa Maria Novella, from florence

in the bos of 'from' and 'to'.
What is this problem?

Afernico Mar 26th, 2012 01:06 PM

Use the italian spelling of each city....Venice is Venezia, Florence is Firenze. As you start typing, the names will automatically pop up and you choose your station. Santa Lucia and Santa Maria Novella should be highlighted as they are main stations.

Venezia S. Lucia
Firenze S. M. Novella
