Vaison la Romaine is not somewhere I would travel without a car. Buses carrying school children are probably the only public transportation option from Orange to Vaison la Romaine:

There is a bus from either of the Avignon train stations:

We visited Vaison la Romaine by train and bus (via Orange) in 2011. We stayed a couple of nights as part of a longer holiday. The bus was fine but not very frequent so you need to have the timetable. It stops in the lower town.

I guess I was not very clear. This question was in case we choose not to go to Dordogne . So then I would take public transportation some where close to Vaison la romaine and then rent a car for Provence. Sorry about the confusion.

Avignon or Orange. If you want to see Avignon, you could consider going there and not renting the car for a day or two while you do other things. I believe Vaison is closest to Orange, however, but not by much.
