Melissa - in southern France you really can't go wrong - Cote d'Azur, Dordogne, etc all swell places but I like the Avignon/Arles area the most because of the plethora of places to visit in a compact area - especially if you have a car:

Les Beaux de Provence; St-Remy-de-Provence; Uzes; the Pont du Gard; Avignon and Arles itself are two of the sweetest and oldest looking cities in France - the wild Camargue, Nimes and its stellar Roman relics, are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. so many varied neat things!

I would do option 2. The French countryside is absolutely beautiful. I love Provence and also Normandy.
