From Palermo train station to hotel

We will be staying at the Principe de Villafranca and arriving at the Palermo train station. Is there a convenient bus to take to the hotel or do we need to take a cab? Difference in price? We will each have a medium sized bag. We're on a budget for this trip but don't want to walk forever with suitcases. Thanks for any advice.

We have stayed there---nice hotel--but it is a good distance from the station---I would guess 2 miles. You will want to taxi. The hotel is in the New Town part of Palermo which is more upscale and not typical of the rest of town---we liked it. You may want to see my trip report from 2005 for more details. I will try to find it.

I would ask the hotel which bus route would work best. You'll be walking distance from Via della Liberta, and there are sure to be buses there if there's nothing closer. Buy your tickets at the booths outside the train station before you board, 1 euro for 120 minutes.

My Sicily trip report for this year, with Palermo at the end, is here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35133064 Have a cannoli for me!

It all depends on the hour, at which time will you arrive?if you arrive before 9 pm, avoid the taxi absolutely (expensive)and take bus 101 or 102 from the station, the ticket now is 1.10 euros. After 9 pm the bus lines are reduced, and would be a long long wait, in that case and with the bags the taxi is better.

Wow, I was just there in the middle of May, and bus tickets have already gone up by 10%!
