From Oslo to Copenhagen

I need to go from Oslo to Copenhagen - what is the best way to do it - by car (how much time?) by train? by ferry? Where can I find details on the ferry or the train (timetable and cost)?
Thanks

It's quite popular to take an overnight ferry. The two ferry lines that come to mind are Color Line and Stena. By train I think it would take about 9 or 10 hours with the regular train, and about half that with the fast train (which conveniently costs twice as much). Sorry that I cannot remember the costs involved.

Erez,
I have done it twice by car. It is long and boring trip, and it takes about
10-12 hours. But it is by far the cheapest way to go. The ferry (which is actually a huge ship) is very expensive. If you are more than 1 person, this is something that you should take into consideration.
In one of our trips we left Oslo in the early afternoon, stayed overnight in a hotel on the highway and arrived in Copenhagen around 11 AM the next day.
If you want more detailed information concerning Norway in general and this strech of the trip in particular, I will be more than happy to assist you in your own language (I recognize your e-mail address). You can contact me at [email protected]
Shalom!

Erez,

Any reason why you don't want to fly?

Sterling's lowest one way fare is NOK 498, so about 60 EUR INCLUDING all taxes & fess.

www.sterlingticket.com

Hope this helps,
Andre

I also have done this twice in the past year--a few times by train and once on the ferry--I did the ferry in August adn the weather was great and it was a very nice trip--other times of the year might be more challenging--the train was fine too--I took a sleeper once--i think I bought some kind of scanrail pass for it

I did this trip by ferry in late September and don't recommend it if you are subject to seasickness. Granted the ferry is enormous, but the seas were so rough that you couldn't walk without holding onto the wall with both hands. And they shur down the elevator because they were afraid the rolling would cause it to get stuck (a clong climb if your abin was on the lowest deck.)

Train might be better - have not tried it.

Hi.
Neither Color Line nor Stena traffic Oslo-Copenhagen. But DFDS (The United Steamship Companies) does. Danish company and with comfortable ferries. Daily departures from Oslo at 17:00, arr CPH at 9 next morning.
info site is: http://www.dfdsseaways.com/

You also have trains, but lately lots of departures are eliminated, I guess also the night train.
More train info, go to Norway's trail company site: http://www.nsb.no

And you have express busses, running all day and night. Single adult price Oslo Cph I guess will be some NOK 3-500. Please don't quote me.
Mor info at: http://www.safflebussen.com

Best regards

BTW
Yes, I agree the sea can be rough in mid/late Sept through Dec.
But if travelling during late spring-summer, you will have no problem at all!

Anyway, have a stong brandy or tw oon your empty stomach, and all will be fabuolous.

Thank you all.
I'm now considering flying from Bergen directly to Copenhagen - what company to look for ? Where can I find info regarding time table and rates for this flight?
Thanks

erez,

Unfortunately, there are no low-fare carriers that I know of flying that route. However, you could take Norwegian Air Shuttle from Bergen to Oslo, then Sterling from Oslo to Copenhagen. Don't know if the timetables work out though - you will have to pick up your luggage and check in again in Oslo, so schedule at least a 2.5 hour layover there.

www.norwegian.no
www.sterlingticket.com

Otherwise, SAS has direct flights, but they're going to cost MUCH more.

Hope this helps,
Andre

Bjorn -

Obviously you are not subject to seasickness. If I had 2 brandies on an empty stomach I would just be drunk and seasick. This trip was so bad that the seasick patch did no good at all - eventually it took a double dose of dramimine to end my misery. (And it wasn't just me - the dining room emptied as soon as we hit open water even though the ship seemed full before we left Oslo fjord.)

This is not to discourage anyone - just to let them know what condiditons might be - since to many people a "ferry" is a small vessel that travels only in calm waters - across a bay etc..

( FYI, people who are subject to seasickness get sick in boats, planes, cars, etc. - I can;t even ride in the back of a limo. I spoke to an ENT about mine and apparently it is related to a variation in the structure of the inner ear).

I don't doubt your experience nytraveler, but just I feel I have to comment that I've been taking the Norway to Denmark ferry probably fifteen to twenty times during my life, and I have never experienced anything remotely like what you described. My guess is you had some rotten luck!

Last May my husband and I took the DFDS ship from Copenhagen to Oslo. It was like a small cruise ship. It was an overnight trip, so even though it was probably more expensive than flying, the fact that accomodations were included should be factored in (Admittedly, our cabin was teeny tiny). There were a variety of restaurants to choose from, bar, disco, duty free shop, movie theatre, etc. I thought it would be an interesting choice of travel, and it seemed quite popular. We had no problems with seasickness. You can find itineraries, etc. at http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/
