From Munich airport to Riem
 

We are staying at the NH Hotel - Dornach. I understand Riem is the closest train stop.

Does anyone know how long it takes from the airport to the Riem stop?

How expeditious is clearing customs in Munich. Seems it took us over an hour in Rome in 2005.

customs takes no time, you simply walk out the door marked 'nothing to declare' after baggage claim.

passport control/immigration has never been longer than 20min, and usually much less in the 3-4 times I've arrived in Munich airport.

S8, change at Leuchtenbergring takes 47 min. The hotel is at one of few "no too easy to reach by public transport" locations outside of Munich.

I'd take the S8 train one stop further than Leuchtenbergring to Ostbahnhof (Munich East) because there are no escalators or lifts at Leuchtenbergring. Not much fun changing platforms there.
You can catch the S2 trains to Riem (heading for Erding or Markt Schwaben) at either station.

Yep, Leuchtenbergring is a sh***y station!

Ops, just checked :-), you'll miss your connection if you change at Ostbahnhof, so it'll take 20min more.

Thanks everyone, now I am thinking I should have asked this question prior to booking my hotel. I reserved these rooms around the first of the year, and I wasn't finding a lot of options.

Would you recommend we take a taxi from the train stop to the hotel? or is it s afairly safe area?

It's not THAT bad. You can walk to Riem station, there's a train every 20min and you'll be downtown in less than 20min from there too. The walking part could get a little annoying. It's just not a place that's in an interesting neighborhood and you have to plan, when to leave to catch the train. But if you like horses and gambling, the race track is within walking distance. :-)

It's safe, no problem, it's just some havy traffic and some backroads. Not what you would call scenic. There's a bigger shopping center at the old airport in Riem, you can also walk there and take the subway. There's also a bus!
