From Marbella to Malaga Airport

We took a taxi on Monday morning and it
took us about 40 minutes. There is also an autovia (but you would have an increase in the taxi fare because of the toll); however, if you are pressed for time, driving on the toll road would be a faster way to reach Malaga.
We have not explored the bus option but I believe that it would be the most economical way to get to Malaga. It also depends where you are staying at Marbella. We stayed at Don Pepe and the bus station was about 5 minutes away from the hotel.

Myer,
The train mentioned is a 'cercania', or commuter, train. It goes directly from Fuengirola to the airport. Cercania trains are identified by a white letter C, rotated to the left (opening of the 'C' faces upper left) in a red circle. This is Malaga commuter line C-1. If you get on at the station indicated, the RENFE timetables show 30 minutes to the airport station. Cost is minimal (about 350 ptas or less than $2). On this line you would get to the airport station before arriving in Malaga city, so going through the city is not necessary. Train info is available at:
http://www.renfe.es/ingles/empresa/cercanias/index.html
Click on Malaga to the lower left of the map of Spain to get the specific info you need.
FYI, I have never taken this train. Last August, when we were in this area, we had a rental car. We drove from our hotel about 10 km east of Marbella city to the airport, using the free autovia, in about 40 minutes early on a Sunday morning. Autovias tend to be free. It is the autopista that has the tolls. In the Marbella-Malaga region both of them have the same route number (N-340), hence possible confusion.
