From London to Chatsworth

Britrail is your only solution but how good it is and how close it will take you is anyones guess. I have been to Chatsworth twice and each time drove myself -- once from London and once from Bedford. You are looking at a significant amount of travel time each way for this to be a day trip and I am not sure it is really manageable in a day outside of having a rental car and doing the trip yourself. If you will be in London anyway I would suggest you speak with the Britrail people -- ever friendly -- and ask for their assistance.

Hi - I live a few miles from Chatsworth and can assure you that you can do the trip London - Chatsworth - London in one day (but don't try it on a Sunday!) Take the train from London St.Pancras rail station to Chesterfield. The trains run hourly, are fast and efficient and will get you to Chesterfield in about 2h 30m. There are hourly buses from Chesterfield (10 mins walk from rail station) to Baslow, which is an attractive village at the gates into Chatsworth Park. Trains run back to London from Chesterfield until about 7 or 8 pm. so you should get several hours to tour Chatsworth House. Any further info on Derbyshire or the Peak National Park I'll be happy to e-mail you with. Have a good trip - Regards, Ron

Dick, I am glad to see Ron could give you the particulars as I could not figure out precisely how easy it would have been to get from Chesterfield over to Chatsworth barring the use of a taxi. When I visit Chatsworth I am usually in the area because I am visiting my friends in Bolsover (also near Chesterfield). In any case, there is a final thing you should ascertain before visiting Chatsworth and that is the opening hours. The first time I tried to visit the place I was with my mum, it was a weekday, and it was closed that day. We stayed overnight in Chesterfield (the church spire is a treat) nd returned bright and early the next morning and discovered the house and gardens didn't open till 11 a.m. So we had to spend several hours wandering around the gorgeous grounds, photographing them (I have better pictures than the best postcards of Chatsworth available in the shop, with the reflection of the House in the water by the bridge making a magnificent photo), photographing the deer on the grounds, examining everything in the shop etc. The good news is, the train trip from London will consume most of the morning so you need not worry about arriving too early for the house and property opening. I still think it is a pity you are not taking a car as the countryside in and around this area of Derbyshire is to die for. Enjoy!

I am planning a visit to Chatsworth in October of this year. I have already confirmed the days and hours it is open, thanks Lanny for that advice, and Ron too! I am now looking for the possibility of a guided tour, like a day trip excursion from London. I generally like to move about on my own, but a few times have discovered a round trip guided tour in a coach, is cheaper and quicker than the train. That is a shame too though because I ADORE mass transit. I know I know I know, I would not like it if I had to do it everyday. But I am an engineers daughter, and was deployed with engineers for 8 yrs, so I love anything to so with rail and subway etc. If I can find this option I will share it with you. If not, I am still happy to take the train.

Do you have a question? If so, why not start a new / current thread of your own (there have been several threads about Chatsworth in just that last couple of weeks)
