From Lisbon -->getting to our Lady of Fatima church and back

LISBON to FATIMA
will be on an escourted tour of Portugal and Spain
Want top go to Fatima- that is not part of our tour ot optional tours..
Want to find the best and most economical.
On Sunday, Sept 9, 2012 @ 9:30, we land in Lisbon with a transfer to our hotel Mundial hotel (near "Castle of St. jorge")

would it be better to go to Fatima directly from the airport, returning to the hotel at night-
this way we would have several hours (by rental car, train, guided car???)
OR
on Monday, Sept 10, we have the afternoon and evening free but most likely wouldn't be able to leave from the hotel til around noon -1:00PM.

thinking about Jet Lag, too
What do you recommend (by rental car, train, guided car???) on the Sunday or Monday

*****Also any good economy place to have dinner at Fatima.
*****I think that the trip from Lisbon to Fatima is 1 hour????
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

It is about an hour on the train from Lisbon to Fatima. I would not go directly from the airport as you will have luggage with you. Go to the hotel, check in, refresh, and then go to Fatima.

I wouldn't hang around long enough for dinner in Fatima. I spent an hour (at most) looking at the Basilica and the apparition site. I didn't go into the church as it was so hot I couldn't walk across the concrete pavement to get there.

What is there that draws you to spend an afternoon and an evening? You'll have more fun in Lisbon.

Fatima was a great disappointment although the Basilica is pretty.

There are companies that do day trips to Fatima but if you have particular needs (airport pickup, early departure/arrival etc) then you could, as you say, go for a tour. One company that we did a lovely private trip to Evora and surrounding areas (very much recommended) with winery visit included is Have a Wine Day ( www.en.haveawineday.com ) . They do a Fatima day trip that also takes in Batalha (big medieval cathedral) as well as a tasting at a winery and visit to some limestone caves that certainly sound pretty impressive. They can tailor the tour to your schedule and preferences, so the price may depend on that.
As people have commented, a place like Fatima isn’t for everyone and doing a private tour like this does mean you get to combine it with some other nice sights.
Also, be aware that once a month from May onwards (on the 12th and 13th?) there are big processions in Fatima and it gets awfully crowded.
