pre-cruise 3 days in Venice Oct 2006, HELP, what to do and where to stay ????

We will be arriving in Venice noon on Sunday Oct 15, but, our cruise doesn't leave until Wed. am. We've never been to Venice, and are looking for recommendations for places to stay for 2 nights, and the top "must see/do" list. Are there any out of town jaunts recommended ? I've heard Lake Como, but, that's 4 hours away. Thanks

If you're only in Venice for 3 days, don't leave for a day trip! There's so much to see that 3 months wouldn't be long enough. I recommend the Guggenheim museum in Dorsoduro--wonderful patio on the Grand Canal. Bar da Gino, right up the calle (sidestreet), has the best cappuccino in Venice. St. Mark's Square is lovely and the basilica is definitely worth seeing, but don't stay around that area--it's overpriced and crowded. There are cheaper hotels in Dorsoduro and it's quieter. Don't stay near the Rialto Bridge either. The Zattere has fabulous views of the lagoon and the best gelato is at Squero, across from the gondola repair yard. Go to the Frari to see Titian's Assumption--breathtaking. Hope this helps a bit!

thanks, obviously, you've spent some time there ! I've read you don't need a car retal to see and do all the things there are.

You can't drive in Venice: It's made up of hundreds of islands separated by canals.

Here's a long thread about things not to miss in Venice:

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34726969

It would take you a lot more than three days to see them all.

You want to know what to do in Venice??? I spotted this "200" list on SlowTalk: http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/venice/re_todo.htm

I'd also suggest going to the destinations section of Fodors and looking at the suggested itineraries and walking tours.
