French Wine Experts: Could This Story Be True?

My partner was in a liquor store buying some red wine for tonight and he got into a conversation with the owner about wines and our upcoming trip to France. They guy told him that when he was in Provence several years ago he bought a few bottles of a certain wine he liked for 10 euros a bottle. These were being sold at a market by a couple who had brought it from their vineyard. Anyway, later in the year, this very wine received a very high rating and his 10 euro bottle of wine was worth $12,000. The moral of his story was that, if we find a wine we like, we should carry a lot of it home, because you never know. My partner was very impressed by the story. I say there's no way a bottle of 10 euro wine can be worth $12,000 a year later. Or is there?

I would strongly doubt the veracity of this story. Especially as it concerns Provencal wine.

Totally bogus.

Thanks. I thought as much. I'd meant to add that he also claimed that he sold a bottle at auction for $7000. People are strange.

No, actually, he claimed he wouldn't have accepted less than $7,000. He purported that he sold it for $12,000.

Well - there are certainly wines you can;t get in the US - usually since so little is produced it is sold primarily locally. So - he might very well get significantly more than he paid for it. But $12,000 - I think he was smoking something as well as drinking a lot.

The owner sounds like a doper. Must have been a slow night.

How much wine can you bring back to the US? I believe there is a $ limit for goods brought back, but is there any other limit that would effect that? (Aside from not being able to keep it in carry-on). Thanks!
