And about time too! Never heard of this heart in a jar. How can the DNA from the heart prove anything unless someone has samples from the parents? Are we talking about digging up graves? Just a bit creepy.

Fascinating story, Cigalechanta. Do you know that for a time there had even been speculation that the Dauphin had survived and lived out his life as famed naturalist and illustrator John James Audubon?
Shanna, DNA tests can be performed using DNA from familial descendants, not just from parents and siblings. This story reminds me of when Britain's Prince Philip submitted a blood sample which finally proved beyond reasonable doubt that Anna Anderson could not have been Grand Duchess Anastasia or even related to the Romanovs. Why? Because all of the European royal families are interrelated through Queen Victoria.

Enroute to Versailles, my daughter was reading "The Lost King of France, How DNA Solved the Mystery of the
Murdered Son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette", by Deborah Cadbury, published 2003. Interesting to read the final? postscript to this page of history.

I learned about the RFI website here, but in any case, if you read French (or want to hear some French spoken), you can check out "infos en francais facile" on
http://www.rfi.fr/fichiers/langue_fr...604/080604.asp
for June 8.
A transcription can be read by clicking on "lire la transcription." The transcript is just a couple of minutes long. It happened to be one that I used to try to brush up on French a couple of weeks ago.

Shanna,
You don't need DNA from the parents to prove an ancestral link. You can use the DNA from any living known member of the blood line.
In the UK a few years ago a teacher was proven to be the ancestor of skeleton from someone who inhabited that area about 9,000 years ago.

Cigalechanta, Yes, I totally agree, and having the story fresh in our minds compelled us to move in and study the portraits of Marie A. and her children...well as close as you can in the crowds at Versailles! Even still, it did add a poignant touch to our visit. The book's adjunct story involving numerous 'pretenders-to-the-French-throne' was also food for thought. (Sorry, can't post about France without some mention of cuisine!!! Bit cheeky for a newbie, though!)

DNA sure solves a lot of mysteries. I represent a lot of parents and children in abuse and neglect cases in DC. Many many named as "fathers" by the mothers are not.
Interesting piece and thanks for posting!
