French music for Zumba? Go figure!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfP8lVfbg5w

Since Zumba is known for its fantastic latin music, I was surprised that this French song is now one of the most requested in the class. The students chant "French, French, French" until the instructor plays it.

It's obviously a popular song as it has over a million hits on Youtube. Just thought I'd share.

BTW, do they do Zumba in Paris?

kerouac May 9th, 2010 11:46 AM

Zumba? Could you explain a bit more, please?

amyb May 9th, 2010 11:58 AM

You'd be even more surprised if you knew what Tu Es Foutu meant. I've been using this in Spinning for years...

Oh my! What a fantastic video! the song is so dynamic and powerful! thanks for sharing!

Zumba is a dance fitness craze. Besides a bazillion youtubes you can find out more about it at www.zumba.com which also has a "class finder" function (if you're serious about finding a class in Paris). Zumba is world-wide... and it IS fabulous (i started 1 year ago and am totally and completely addicted).

suze May 9th, 2010 06:21 PM

Yup, 38 classes listed for Paris

TPAYT May 9th, 2010 06:42 PM

kerouac---are you going to Zumba?

TPAYT May 9th, 2010 06:43 PM

amyb----so what does it mean?

MademoiselleFifi May 9th, 2010 06:55 PM

The English lyrics are nothing like the French.

suze May 9th, 2010 07:14 PM

you are screwed up

TPAYT May 9th, 2010 07:17 PM

suze---what do you mean? MademoiselleFifi or what? And what about the lyrics?

sicilyan May 9th, 2010 07:29 PM

Tu Es Foutu = you are screwed up

TPAYT May 9th, 2010 07:33 PM

Now I get it! Merci.

suze May 9th, 2010 07:42 PM

sorry TPAYT, I couldn't resist pulling your leg above.

actually i assume it really means "you are f@#$%ed up" but screwed up is what www.free translation gave me.

i find that song extremely hypnotic, dreamlike. that's what it has in common with many of the latin zumba songs.

kerouac May 9th, 2010 10:50 PM

actually, "tu es foutu" means "you're done for".

PatrickLondon May 10th, 2010 01:02 AM

It doesn't have the taboo emotional force of its English cognate, as with "con".

kerouac May 10th, 2010 03:00 AM

However, the root verb "foutre" is a most definitely vulgar word in French, even though its various conjugations have lost most of their nastiness.

sicilyan May 10th, 2010 04:03 PM

Whatever !!...I still love this video and song...it is unbelievable!...I am still playing it as much as possible...the french version is much better than the english version.

A French cyclist I met last year said the closest English translation is "you're f*cked".
