French Impressionism and Berlin
 

A couple of guidebooks have said that the Neue Nationalgallerie has some French Impressionist paintings, but the Gallery's website itself suggests that it's mainly 20th century art. Can anyone say if there are impressionist or post-impressonist works in this museum?

Also, are there museums besides the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Berggruen that have Impressionist paintings?

The Sammulung Bergruen, which you mention in your post, is the result of one man's collection and focuses on Picasso. Make sure to get the headset. It is narrated by Mr. Bergruen--and it provides a real education in Picasso's art.

I loved the Bergruen even more than the Picasso Museum in Paris. Who would have thought that such a Picasso Museum would be in Berlin.

When we got to the Neue NationalGalerie three weeks, specifically to see the Impressionists, we found it closed prior to opening of a new major exhibit. But after checking

it seems there is only art work from the 1900's at the N NG.

A brochure I picked up at the Alte NationalGalerie explicitly states its focus is "Nineteenth Century Painting and Sculpture."

Note that all of Berlin's museums have been undergoing changes (and will continue to do so) for many years; thus, a guidebook only a few years old could be completely out of date.

Not to be picky but:

Impressionism *is* 20th century art.

Thanks for the tip about the Neue Gallerie. It really is all very confusing to me, but there is so much renovation/re-openings and movement of stuff from different museums and locations in Berlin that its making it hard to know where to go for that stuff. In any event, I hope whatever used to be in the Neue gallery is now somewhere else so that I can enjoy it, as opposed ot being closed.

I was under the impression that Alte Gallerie was mostly stuff before the 19th century, but maybe that's now Gemaldiegallerie? I feel like I need a cheat sheet!

Sorry, Nessundorma, but Impressionism is 19th-century art. Most of Post-Impressionism is also 19th-century art.
