"French homes to feel pinch of austerity in 2012 "
From http://www.france24.com/en/20120102-...sarkozy-fillon
"As part of a deficit-reducing plan ... VAT will go from 5.5% to 7% for many consumer goods this week,.... Bills for restaurants, hotels ... will also be more expensive in 2012..... . The cost of Paris-region commuter trains and buses saw a rise of 1.5% even before January, and the national railway said it would increase the price of high-speed and interregional rail by 3.2% starting on January 3.

This is not much of a surprise since the fares of the Paris metropolitan area are adjusted every year on July 1st -- and only on July 1st.
France 24 could have also mentioned that fares are going down for many people in the Paris metropolitan area this year because the zones are going to be cancelled. By the end of spring, anybody with a Navigo will be able to travel anywhere in the region (including CDG or Versailles) during the weekend with just a Paris zone Navigo pass. By the end of the year, there will be just one rate for the entire region -- more expensive monthly rate for Parisians but very much cheaper for anybody living in the far suburbs.

Kerouac,
Are you sure the monthly navigo rate will be more expensive for Parisians? I read that it's the zones 1-2 rate that would apply to all. In which case, it would reduce costs for most suburbanites except for those who get zones 2-3, 3-4 or 4-5 passes. One of the annoying things about the present system is the impossibility to get only one zone. A lot of people work and live in the same zone yet have to buy 2 zones minimum...
In any case, the future one zone system will reduce the number of RATP-related questions on the travel forums
