French equivalent of German Gasthaus

In Germany we like to stay in small family owned gasthauses or gasthofs that have some rooms upstairs and a restaurant downstairs. What would be the equivalent in France?

For somewhere with a restaurant, you may be better looking at some of the smaller Logis de France, or alternatively one of the chambres d'hote which offers table d'hote as well.

We found a big time-saver was to look for the chamber of commerce tourist bureau in most towns -- usually with a sign: syndicat d-initiatif. All sorts of help for free.
